YA’LL I’m so excited to share this project today. My latest mural in Dallas is DONE and I’m so in love with how it turned out! This mural was my most detailed and colorful mural yet. It definitely had its challenges, but it feels so great to be able to share the finished product. I can’t wait for everyone to see it!
Last year I was asked by the Dallas Arboretum’s new President and CEO, Sabrina Carr, to help bring life to the tunnel that connects the parking garage across Garland Road to the Garden.
The pedestrian tunnel was originally built back in 2014 by AR Daniel Construction. During peak visitation times, the Garden’s overflow parking garage across Garland Road is often utilized, but because Garland is a busy highway, they needed to create a safe way for pedestrians to get across.
So the tunnel was built, but it stayed blank for years…until now!
After tons of planning, we got started on the project in February. It took us several weeks to paint for a few reasons!
First, the tunnel itself is 155’ long, and I painted both sides. It was a lot of surface area!
And second, since we were painting in February we had a few setbacks. The design is a floral and garden theme (of course!), with lots of bright colors. But cold paint dries really slowly, and all of our colors needed multiple coats, so this added quite a bit of time. There were also a few mornings where we had to have a later start because of the extreme cold temperatures.
I wouldn’t trade the process for the world though, I’m so proud of the final product! And, I of course have to shout out to all of the help I received on this one. It truly takes a village!
My favorite part of this project was surprising the Garden with an AR experience. I worked with Groove Jones to create an augmented reality experience for visitors as they walk through the tunnel. They scan a QR code, which launches their camera’s video to show butterflies flying all around the tunnel!
It gives the user a fun, whimsical feeling like you’re actually walking through the garden in the mural.
It’s such a cool feature, and it was definitely a hit with the team from the Garden! If you’re local, or visiting Dallas, I highly recommend a trip to the Arboretum– it’s beautiful. And you’ll have to take a walk through the tunnel of course!
This mural is one of my favorites in Dallas for sure. I love when I get the chance to take on larger-scale pieces like this, it’s such a fun and rewarding challenge.
[Kind of like the mural I did last year for The Evermore Resort in Orlando!]
